Information

This hike is by far the most popular of the series and may not be repeated again for a long time.

  • Climb the Coit Tower neighborhood that many people have been close to but never seen.
  • Explore manicured gardens along some of the many hidden stairways in town.
  • See Diago Rivera’s political mural (and maybe a work in progress if we’re lucky) at the San Francisco Art Institute on Chestnut.
  • See beautiful, architectually historic homes on Russian Hill
  • See the curvy part of Lombard Street from a new perspective.
  • Walk the last wooden street in San Francisco.

Bring water, lunch snacks, camera, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection/sweater (depending on the weather) and energy. Parking meters don’t run on Sunday, so you should have no trouble finding a spot on the street. Although a fairly strenuous hike of about 3-1/2 hours (but less than 5 miles), we will stop frequently for the views and snacks. We will eat lunch at a local restaurant (optional).

HURRY: Signup limited to 25 applicants so we can point out the many features of note without shouting.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? We just got through with Nikkei Matsuri and you say it’s time to start thinking about volunteering once again? Yup, it’s that time of year again! But the folks at the MVBT must be taking pity on us this year since they only need help for the beer booth, the nickel pitch and the tempura booth this year.

Tempura Booth
SAT 7/18 shifts3:30PM to 5:30PM, 5:30PM to 7:30PM, 7:30PM to 9:30PM.
SUN 7/19 shifts11:30AM to 2PM, 2PM to 4PM, 4PM to 6PM, 6PM to 10PM.
Nickel Pitch Booth
SAT 7/18 shifts4PM to 6PM, 6PM to 8PM, 8PM to 10PM.
SUN 7/19 shiftsNoon to 2PM, 2PM to 4PM, 4PM to 6PM, 6PM to 9PM.
Beer Booth
SAT 7/18 shifts4PM to 7PM, 7PM to 10PM.
SUN 7/19 shiftsNoon to 3PM, 3PM to 6PM, 6PM to 9PM.

We will be circulating a spreadsheet with more information as soon as practical. We volunteer for this event since the MVBT lets us use their facilities for preparing food for Nikkei Matsuri and other events plus the use of their hall for some of our other events throughout the year. We need to keep them happy by helping them out whenever we can.

It seems we’ve been getting a somewhat free ride at the Palo Alto Buddhist Church for a number of years. They let us use a room for our board meetings (for a small fee) but we never volunteered for their events till last year. Turns out they would really like us to volunteer, so let’s show them we appreciate the use of their room by volunteering for their Obon festival on August 1 and 2 (Sat & Sun). The festival is at the Church on 2750 Louis Rd. in Palo Alto (just S of Oregon Expressway). Last year, I helped shuck corn for a couple of hours with Joel Hayashida; other jobs to be determined.

It’s another chance to socialize with your friends in the club and meet new friends in Palo Alto. Please carve out a couple of hours (or more) to help out this worthy cause. We don’t yet have specific time slots for specific duties so take pot luck till they are available. First ones to sign up get first choice of duties and times. Contact to secure your preferred slot. Join in on an exciting day of rockfish/lingcod fishing aboard the New Seeker from Emeryville Sportfishing as Nisei Ski Club embarks on Grand Slam VIII. You can see mesmerizing views of the beautiful California Coast or the Farallon Islands and maybe spot a whale or other marine wildlife while enjoying the company of fellow NSC members, great food and drink, and the thrill of a tasty rockfish or hard-fighting lingcod on the end of the line.

Bring a potluck dish. NSC will provide drinks.

Space is limited to 28. After Friday, July 17th, spaces cannot be guaranteed because remaining spaces may be released to the general public. So sign up early!

Our first choice will be rockfish/lingcod. However, should the ocean prove too rough, Potluck Bay fishing for halibut/striped bass will be the alternative.

5:00 AM: Meet at Marina. Buy license and tackle kit and rent rod if necessary.
6:00 AM: Departure
4:00 PM (approx.): Return to Marina
