Sit in a comfortable sheltered environment with panoramic views or watch the race on your monitor at your table.  Place a bet on a horse and win.

Date: Saturday  November 13, 2010.

Where: Golden Gate Fields Racetrack Turf Club

Price: $32.00 per person (Limited to 25).

Event price includes a brunch buffet at the Turf Club, valet parking, and Race program. Free Golden Gate umbrella promotion day to every patron, while supplies last.  You must be at least 18 years of age to wager a bet.

Dress Code enforced.  All guests are requested to dress in a smart casual style.  No jeans.  We discourage sweatpants/suits, T-shirts, baseball hats, and thong style shoes.  Guests who arrive in shorts of any style, or tank-tops, or clothing with offensive logos will be denied access.

What to bring: All riders MUST wear a helmet and should carry a pump.  Bikes should be in good condition.  You should bring a water bottle, spare inner tube, patch kit, sunscreen, and snacks to share (optional).  Due to unpredictable weather, a light jacket is suggested for cool weather conditions.

Help needed: Group leaders and flat-fixers needed in case we split up into multiple groups. No SAG Support but we will be equipped for flats and minor repairs.

The Oakland Museum of California presenting PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation, a major exhibition of over 500 works by the artists at Pixar Animation Studios, including drawings, paintings, and sculptures that illustrate the creative process and craftsmanship behind Pixar’s wildly successful computer-animated films. This will be a significantly enhanced presentation of the exhibition, which is returning home to Oakland after a successful worldwide tour that began at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2005. A number of significant works will be on public display for the first time, including art from Ratatouille, WALL•E, Up, and Pixar’s latest feature film, Toy Story 3. PIXAR will also include an updated, awe-inspiring version of the Pixar Artscape, a widescreen media installation. The exhibition will be accompanied by screenings of Pixar’s feature and short films; a special program of lectures, talks and workshops with Pixar artists; and a new and expanded exhibition catalogue.

The Oakland Museum of California is at 1000 Oak Street, at 10th Street, in Oakland. OMCA is situated between downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt. The entrance to the parking garage is on Oak Street between 10th and 12th streets. Disabled parking slots and entrance to the Museum are on the street level of the garage. A disabled pedestrian entrance ramp is located on Oak Street, and at 10th and Fallon Street.

Sunday street parking is also available.

]]> http://www.niseiskiclub.org/posts/nisei-ski-club-tours-the-oakland-museum-of-california-%e2%80%9cpixar-%e2%80%93-25-years-of-animation%e2%80%9d-exhibition/feed/ 0 San Francisco Stairway Hike #4 July 25 (Sun) 2010 http://www.niseiskiclub.org/posts/san-francisco-stairway-hike-4-_july-25-sun-2010/ http://www.niseiskiclub.org/posts/san-francisco-stairway-hike-4-_july-25-sun-2010/#comments Sat, 22 May 2010 20:13:24 +0000 Hoyt Nelson http://www.niseiskiclub.org/?p=749 This is a repeat of a popular hike that hasn’t been done since July ’07.  It includes parts of  the Marina, Cow Hollow and Pacific Heights districts with lots of  grand views and magnificent architecture.  We will meet at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts at the corner of Marina and Lyon (parking in the Exploratorium lot just W of the Exploratorium – NOT at the 4 hour limit lot right next to the building) at 10AM with the usual layered clothing, camera, snacks and liquids and a little money for shopping and lunch.  “Facilities” are at the Palace and along some of the shopping streets plus a few blue port-a-potties.  Time is expected to be less than 4 hours, but we may spend time around the Palace grounds (if renovation fences are down by then) and taking in scenery here and there.  We will pass many stately homes and descend the fabulous Lyon St. stairs – surely the grandest in San Francisco (pictured below).

NSC has a long-standing tradition of selling Chinese chicken salad at the yearly Nikkei Matsuri festival in the spring (Sunday Apr 25 this year).  This has always been our biggest money maker of the year and is needed in particular this year in view of the subsidies we paid out this year to attract new members.  We need to get started ASAP for this activity because the festival is so early this year, there are many tasks to complete and time has a way of slipping away all too quickly.

The more volunteers we get, the less time will be required from each of us, so please help NSC in any way you can.  Previous Nikkei Matsuris have needed about 50 volunteers.  Since our membership is around 110, this means we need about 1 out of every 2 members to volunteer.  If we get that many volunteers, each of us won’t need to put in extraordinary effort.

We need about 50 volunteers for food prep, cooking, final assembly, and selling and we need you to sign up by Apr. 1.  If you can help in any way, please see Alice Horio at .

This year our preseason event will feature a fun evening playing bunco.  Sandy McGregor, our former board member introduced the game to us and those who attended her event are now hooked on it.   It is really easy to learn and is very entertaining.  Bunco is a game of dice played in rounds.  Players take turns rolling the dice and trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round.  The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two.   Prizes will be awarded at the end of the game.
