BAC DSUSA Oakland A’s Fundraiser/BBQ – August 22

~ Sandy Kiyomura, Board Member ~

BAC
This will be the 10th year that BAC has hosted an A’s/fireworks game to benefit Disabled Sports USA Far West (DSUSAFW). Disabled Sports USA has a ski school at Alpine Meadows. They are a fantastic organization, providing low-cost ski instruction to individuals with physical or mental challenges. They do not receive any kind of Federal or State funding and depend on donations as well as volunteers (I was a volunteer ski instructor for over 10 years).
You will get field-level seats as well as a great view of the fireworks afterward. Last year, BAC had 200 ski club participants and it would be great if Nisei could get a few fans to support this effort. Please join me for this game. It will be fun and also benefit DSUSA.

In addition there is a pre-game BBQ. Dennis Heffley, BAC past-president gets a commercial grill into the parking lot and there will be burgers, hot dogs, salads and his famous homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Contact Sandy Kiyomura (skiyomura@gmail.com) if you are interested in attending this fun and worthwhile event, and also see the flyer in the newsletter. Link to flyer:BAC DSUSA Baseball Game Flyer in the newsletter. If you are planning on attending, then remit a check in the amount of $32/per seat to Sandy Kiyomura made payable to Nisei Ski Club.

SF STAIRWAY WALK #1 (The LAST time I will lead this hike) Sun. May 3, 2015

This hike is by far the most popular of the series. This is an ideal time of year to do it (unless our crazy weather patterns continue).  Some of the highlights of the hike are:

  • Climb the Coit Tower neighborhood that many people have been close to, but never seen.
  • Explore expertly-manicured gardens along some of the many hidden stairways in town.
  • See Diego Rivera’s political mural at the San Francisco Art Institute on Chestnut.
  • See beautiful, architecturally historic homes on Russian Hill.
  • See the curvy part of Lombard Street from a new perspective.
  • Walk the last wooden street in San Francisco.
  • See the wild parrots of the Telegraph Hill.

MEET 9:30 AM AT LEVI STRAUSS PLAZA at 1255 Battery St. (bounded by Sansome, Battery, Union and Greenwich) with water, lunch snacks, camera, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection/sweater (depending on the weather), SF map and energy. Parking meters don’t run on Sunday again, so you should have no trouble finding a spot on Sansome, Battery or their cross streets.  If all else fails, try for an all day parking lot along the Embarcadero.

Although a fairly strenuous hike of about 3-1/2 hours (but less than 5 miles), we will stop frequently for the views and snacks. We will eat lunch at a local restaurant (optional).

To sign up and get detailed meeting instructions or help with transportation, contact Hoyt Nelson at Stairs#1@niseiskiclub.org.

HURRY: Signup limited to 20 applicants so we can point out the many features of note without shouting.

NSC’s STAIRWAY HIKE IN OAKLAND ( ROCK RIDGE HILLS), SUN. Oct. 26, 2014 – NEW DATE

Nelson Stamp~Hoyt Nelson~

New hike date Oct 26, 2014

The temperature trend is going down now so let’s try for this new date. It’s a 5-mile steeple-chase through up-scale neighborhoods in the Oakland hills with even more stairs and hidden paths than in our SF stairway hikes. This hike was last run in 10-06, so it will be new to most of you.

We will meet on the E end of Broadway (near Hwy. 24) at the corner of Rock Ridge Blvd. at 10 AM. There is plenty of free parking on Rockridge. It’s about 4 blocks from the Rockridge BART (which should have bathroom facilities). From BART, go under Hwy 24, on College Av. And take the 3rd L onto Lawton.   Just across Broadway, jog R a few feet to Rockridge. We should be back to our cars by 1:30 and out from (optional) lunch by 3:00 or 3:30.

Bring warm and cool weather clothing, hat, camera, drinks and snacks and sturdy walking shoes. Except for shops on nearby College Ave., there are no places for food, drink or facilities. If we are lucky, we may find unlocked construction porta-potties along the route, but they don’t seem to be available as much lately. After the hike, we will plan to meet at a local restaurant for lunch (optional). Since we go mainly through residential areas, I have to limit size to 17 maximum, so contact Hoyt Nelson at rockridge@niseiskiclub.org soon for signups or more info.

FWSA Whistler Ski Week ~ Jan 31-Feb 7, 2015

Just in case you didn’t get onto Armand’s Jackson Hole trip, here’s an invite from the Far West Ski Association (FWSA) and BAC to go with them to Whistler, British Columbia.

Far West Ski Association

Hello Fellow BAC Skiers!

The FWSA Ski Week to Whistler BC is coming up next year, and it is going to be an AWESOME trip.  Whistler is the largest ski resort in North America with the longest runs, and a new “Peak to Peak” gondola connecting the twin peaks.  It is consistently rated the #1 Ski Resort in North American by Ski Magazine, so this will be a trip you do not want to miss.
We already have over 70 people from 8 different ski clubs in the BAC signed up, but we couldn’t help but notice that no one from your club is signed up!  We have attached the announcement flyer and a trip preference form here.  Could you please circulate these to your members and put them in your newsletter?  Thanks for helping get the word out.

Hope to see you on the slopes at Whistler! —

SF LAND’S END HIKE ALONG THE HEADLANDS, Sunday – Aug. 17, 2014

 ~ by Hoyt Nelson ~

Hike Date : Suday, August 17, 2014

We will meet at 10:00 AM in the parking lot just uphill from the Cliff House (at the Visitor Center next to the Merrie Way parking lot).  We will explore the old Sutro mansion site and bath ruins before following the trail east along the headlands towards the Golden Gate Bridge.  Trails are mainly flat with some stairs and 5.5 to 7 miles round trip – depending on where we elect to turn around.  Time is 3.5 – 4.5 hours depending on our preferences.  Bring layered clothing, camera, strong hiking shoes, water and snacks.  Bathroom facilities are at Visitor Center, but very limited elsewhere.  There are several restaurants I can suggest after the hike for lunch.  If you are game, I will also lead an optional short walk up Strawberry Hill in the middle of Stow Lake (in GG Park) for some surprises many have never seen.

To sign up or request carpool help, contact Hoyt Nelson at landsend@niseiskiclub.org.  Some can carpool at my place.

NSC INVITES YOU TO ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE HIKES, Cowell Redwoods ~ Sunday, June 22, 2014

  by Hoyt Nelson

Date: Sunday, June 22, 2014

The hike at the Fall Creek section of Cowell Redwoods is only about 5 miles round trip and is fairly flat and shaded.  It follows the beautiful Fall Creek for most of the way and has a stop  after 1.5 miles at an area with 12 foot high abandoned lime kilns.  We will lunch a mile later amid the scattered machinery of an old barrel factory.  It’s a bit far to drive for some, but believe me, it’s worth it.

Directions:

  • Take a Right onto Mt. Hermon Rd off Hwy 17 just a couple of miles North of Santa Cruz
  • Drive about 5 miles through Felton,
  • Continuing across Hwy 9 up the hill for less than a mile
  • to a signed dirt parking lot on the Right.

There is also a winery across the road just before the lot for free tasting afterward.  If anybody still has energy, we can stop at one of the best Japanese gardens in the state, Hakone Gardens (free parking if we take the short trail up the hill, but $7 entrance), on the way back in Saratoga.  There are several great restaurants nearby to round the day off.

There is neither water nor bathrooms along the hike, but there are at the winery.  Bring layered clothes for changeable weather, a lunch with drinks at the old barrel mill, and possibly something to share.  Due to the distance, carpooling is highly recommended.  At the least, we should meet at my house in Campbell and consolidate vehicles there.  I plan to leave my place in Campbell at 9:30 AM and I can take 5 more people.

For more info. or to sign up, contact me, Hoyt, at  fallcreek@niseiskiclub.org.

Redo of San Francisco Stairway Hike #2 – May 4, 2014

by Hoyt Nelson
It’s been years  since we have done this hike (Twin Peaks, Dolores Heights, Upper Market.) and this is the perfect time for good weather, flowers and scenery.  We will meet at 10:30 AM on Twin Peaks Blvd. near the intersection of Crown Terrace.  It’s a fairly strenuous hike of 3.5 to 4 hours, but we will stop frequently for snacks and views.  I cut the length down a bit from the original.  This will make it similar in length to hike #1 (Coit Tower, etc.)
Bring clothes for warm and cold weather including a hat, comfortable hiking shoes, sun block, drinks and snacks as desired and camera.   There are no “formal” bathroom stops on this route, but there are usually a number of fairly clean porta-potties along the way at construction sites.  There is one water fountain at the bottom of Pemberton near the start and several small markets along the way for refreshments.  I can take up to 6 more in my van.  First come, first served.  Otherwise, use your GPS or follow directions below.  Be advised my van will stay in SF for lunch after the hike.  We can finalize at that time where to go.  If desired, we can first drive up to nearby Twin Peaks for a quick look at perhaps the very best view of the city (+ restroom) before lunch.
Directions From Jan Jose area: Take Hwy 101 N. to Mariposa St. exit (just N. of Cesar Chavez in San Francisco) and take an immediate L. onto Vermont.  Turn L. onto 16th for about 2 miles and bear L. onto Market at Noe.  Bear R at the next block onto 17th for 6-8 blocks and make a L at Twin Peaks Blvd. (It’s the third L. past Ord, and is marked as Clayton on the R.).  A little past the next R. (Carmel) you will see 23 wood stairs on the R. across the street from Crown Terrace where we meet   If you come back on 16th after the walk, take a R on Potrero and follow signs to 101 South.  There’s lots of parking on Twin Peaks Blvd.
From San Francisco or E. Bay: From the Bay Bridge exit to San Francisco (Hwy 80), continue on 80 toward signs for Van Ness.  Exit at Van Ness and take an immediate L. onto S. Van Ness.  Go 3 blocks S. and take a R on 16th.  Continue W. on 16th  for about 1.5 miles and take a L. onto Twin Peaks Blvd. (It’s the third L. past Ord, and is marked as Clayton on the R). (Heads up at 16th and Market!  It’s confusing and congested.)  A little past the next R. (Carmel) you will see 23 wood steps on the R which are across the street from Crown Terrace where we meet.  There’s lots of parking on Twin Peaks Blvd.

ST. JOSEPH’S HILL: A NEW HIKE FOR NSC on Sunday Apr. 6

~ by Hoyt Nelson ~

Great views of Lexington Reservoir to the West at the start and a sweeping view of the Santa Clara Valley to the East at the top.  There will still be monkey flowers, Scotch broom and remnants from the vineyards that supplied sacramental wine for the Novitiate in Los Gatos many years ago.

Take Hwy 17 South  just past Los Gatos and go R at Bear Creek Road  so you can double back on the other side of 17 on Alma Bridge Road across the spillway.  If no room there, you may need  to pay for  a parking lot on the R where boaters put in.   We meet there at 10 AM where the hike begins just a few feet further on the left up the hill.

I have done this hike 3 or 4 times, but can’t find any my pix, so I attached a few from bahiker.com.   This is a good source of hiking information in the Bay Area for your future reference.  It’s a little over 3 miles round trip on a semi-loop dirt trail  with about 650 ft. of elevation change.   We should be done by noon.  Not much shade, so bring a hat, drinks,  and layer your clothing.  Also bring camera, sturdy footwear and snacks.   There is no water , but bathroom facilities are in the parking lot.  There’s lots of spots for lunch nearby after the hike, or you can bring your own.

Contact stjosephshill@ niseiskiclub.org to sign up and get more information.

A NEW NSC SAN FRANCISCO STAIRWAY HIKE IN BERNAL HEIGHTS ~ SAT. AUGUST 3, 2013

by Hoyt Nelson

This hike, like many others in my popular series, was adapted from the book “Stairway Walks in San Francisco” by Adah Bakalinsky, now in its 7th edition.  As usual, it has lots of stairs, interesting neighborhoods, fine views and flower gardens.  It will take about 3.5 hours with stops for views,  snacks and/or lunch.

DIRECTIONS: From north or south on Hwy 101 in San Francisco, exit at Cesar Chavez (Army) and take it going W.  After about 0.5 mi. W on Chavez, go L (south) onto Folsom, which turns into  Bernal Heights Blvd. somewhere after it veers left.  Stay straight at the next junction after that (at a small parking lot on the right) and follow Bernal Heights, staying right at the next 3 junctions (the last being Ellsworth – see map).  About 0.5 mi. past the small parking lot (a bit past Ellsworth and Anderson) Bernal Heights takes a hairpin turn R at a dry open staging area on the L with a drinking fountain and 2 stone benches. We will meet there at 10:00.  Select the link and Ctrl-click it to see the map.  If you have trouble, just go to Googlemaps, enter “Bernal Heights San Francisco” and zoom in.  The staging area is a “bump” on the lower left side of the wide, brown area that is Bernal Heights.  http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Bernal+Heights,+San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.74498,-122.410698&spn=0.006863,0.016479&sll=37.768086,-122.405441&sspn=0.006446,0.013175&oq=Bernal+Heights&t=h&hnear=Bernal+Heights,+San+Francisco,+California&z=17

Bring liquids, snacks/lunch, layered clothing, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection and camera.  Also bring a piece of cardboard or carpet “sled”  for a slide along the hike.   Later, we can lunch in one of the many interesting places on/near Valencia St. (or elsewhere).   To sign up or for questions, contact Hoyt at Bernal@niseiskiclub.org.

Take Hwy 17 South just past Los Gatos and exit at Bear Creek Road (Lexington Reservoir on your left) so you can  go left and double back on the other side of 17 on Alma Bridge.  Continue across the dam spillway  to a parking lot on the right.   There is a $4 parking fee and you may get a ticket if you park along the road to avoid this so carpooling is suggested.  (We can meet at my place at 9:30).  We meet in the parking lot at 10 AM where the hike begins just a few feet further on the left up the hill.

I have done this hike 3 or 4 times, but can’t find any my pix, so I attached a few from http://www.bahiker.com.   This is a great detailed source of hiking information in the Bay Area –  60 hikes that are roughly as far south as Santa Cruz/Gilroy to about Healdsburg to the north and to Brentwood in the east.  It’s easy to navigate and  includes exhaustive lists of related information.

The hike is a little over 3 miles round trip on a semi-loop dirt trail with about 650 ft. of elevation change.   We should be done by noon.  Not too much shade, so bring a hat, sunscreen, drinks, and layer your clothing.  Also bring camera, snacks and wear sturdy foot. There is a porta-potty but no water in the parking lot.

I can suggest lots of spots for lunch nearby or you can bring your own.

Pinnacles National Park hike, Saturday, Mar 30.

The new Pinnacles National Park has become the 59th full national park in the United States, joining Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, the Everglades and the other most storied parts of America’s national heritage.

The park, a 26,000-acre expanse featuring rocky spires, caves and California condors that was first set aside as a monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt, also becomes the closest national park to the Bay Area now, supplanting Yosemite National Park.

Nisei Ski Club is planning this hike for Saturday, March 30th, 2013, weather permitting.

NSC BERKELEY Hike #2 – SUN, NOV.11,2012

~led by Hoyt Nelson ~

Come join us trouping through the hills of N. Berkeley in the gardens of some of the most picturesque old  “designer” homes in the Bay Area. I have mapped out a route based on several hikes from my favorite hike book in this area: “Hidden Walks in the Bay Area” by Stephan Altschuler.  There is an adult concrete slide near the start so you may want to bring a sturdy cardboard “sled” of at least 3′ x 3′.  For more speed, firmly attach a sheet of wax paper to the bottom (not plastic cling wrap).

The slide is very close to the start so you can take it back to your car if you want before the rest of the hike. The pictures in this flyer are from the preview I did in March.

It should take about 3.5-4 hours and starts at the Berkeley Rose Garden (intersection of Euclid & Eunice – click => for a MAP <=) at 10 AM.  More details will be sent after you sign up.  Bring layered clothing, camera, strong hiking shoes, water and snacks/lunch.  Bathroom facilities are at the start and at our lunch stop at Cragmont Rock Park.  There are several restaurants I can suggest for lunch after the hike and/or you can bring something for our Cragmont Park stop.  Rain may cancel the trip.  I will keep signups informed.  For more info contact Hoyt Nelson at: berkeley@niseiskiclub.org.
