Over 25 Nisei Ski Club members, families and friends headed to Oracle Park for the final game of a 3-game series between the SF Giants vs. LA Dodgers game on Sunday, September 27. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful clear day at the “Yard.”
Although the Giants lost the game, it was a very emotional farewell to Mike Krukow,
former pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants from 1983-1989. He’s been a television and longtime radio broadcaster for the Giants since 1990 along with friend and former teammate Duane Kuiper. Mike Krukow spent 36 years in the broadcast booth and is famous for cool “Krukisms” slang, clubhouse humor and catchphrases. Some include: “Attababe!”, “Gamer Babes”, “Grab some pine, meat”, “In the squaaaat”, “Stank eye” to name a few. Discussions continue about inducting them to the Baseball Hall of Fame together! Quite a tribute and we will miss him!
Game overview and controversies:
- Top of the 3rd inning, Sam Hentges was pitching to Dodger batter Mookie Betts. After 9 pitches there was a disagreement whether Betts took a check or full swing. Tony Vitello, Giants’ Manager, protested the call with a heated exchange with plate umpire Marvin Hudson. Vitello was ejected from the game but received a standing ovation from Giants fans!!
- Bottom of 8th inning, Christian Koss hit a deep line drive to left field. It was called a home run, which would have put the Giants ahead of the Dodgers 2-1. WAIT A MINUTE! After a careful review, the hit was overturned and called a foul. As it was, the game returned to 1-1, tied.
- Top of the 9th, Dodger Miguel Rojas scored a run and the Dodgers took the lead at 2-1. In extra innings play (top of 10th), Dodger Andy Pages hammered to left field with a 3-run homer.
- Final game score LA Dodgers 5 to SF Giants 1.
Despite the loss and injured Giants: Matt Chapman (3B), Willie Adames (SS), Rafael Devers (DH), Jung Ho Lee (RF), and Logan Webb, pitcher, the Giants did very well. Let’s look forward to “growing” the team next year with the large number of rookie and potential players.
Kudos to: Scott Bandura (OF), Osleivis Basabe (2B), Victor Bericoto (OF), Jonah Cox (2B), Bo Davidson (RF), Bryce Eldridge (1B), Turner Hill (LF), and Marcelo Meyer (infielder), to name a few. And, a BIG welcome back to Camilo Duval, (RH pitcher).
Some comments from NSC Club Members and guests:
- Wes: “It was great fun, even if we lost the game and the season. Looking forward to a better outcome next year.”
- Kelly: “Thank you for the great tix! Yay for home plate and shade!”
- Rick & Corinne: “My wife Corinne and I really enjoyed going to the Nisei Ski Club’s outing at the SF Giants game. Great weather, great seats behind home plate, and exciting game until the end. Loved the goodies passed around by the group, and got to know the couple next to us, Randy & Kelly, who like us met skiing thru Nisei Ski Club decades ago. We’ll definitely try to make other activities in the future. Thanks for organizing this fun Giants one.
- The game highlight (for me) was my granddaughter, Aubrey, as the junior announcer for the 3rd inning!
GO GIANTS!
