September is going to be a busy month – our board meetings resume (we took August off), a Saturday hike on the Timberline Trails, the Giants vs. Dodgers ball game, and work on the Snowmass trip. And it appears we are heading for some cooler weather and not the string of hot days that we’ve had in the past few weeks. For you Palisades fans rejoice in the fact that they’re making the following updates:

• Updating some of the KT and Funitel towers
• Improving snowmaking with new pipe
• Snowmaking improvements at Alpine Meadows as well

Membership Report

August was fairly weak for membership with only six sign-ups, and that brings our roster to 94 members. Our all-time high from last year was 114, so there’s still time to hopefully break that record. We also have 15 new members for this year.

2027 NSC Ski Week – Important Update

Snowmass for 2027 is slowly making progress but not where we should be. We currently have 17 signups and we need at least 4 more people (a couple and two singles) to meet our minimum lodging requirement. If you’re thinking about going on Snowmass then now is the time to take that step forward and send in your application and payment. Also, the second payment is due September 20, so get your checkbooks out.

The Ikon Pass includes Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk, and the Ikon Base Pass is good only for Snowmass. However, if you don’t want to get an Ikon Pass then Sports America is offering 5/6-day (adult/senior) lift tickets that will be good for all four mountains. Details and signups are in the Snowmass Flyer on the Events & Ski Trips tab.

NSC Annual Luau Picnic – What a Great Day!

Even though I was planning the NSC Annual Luau Picnic from New York, after so many years of organizing picnics for 50+ people, it has gotten a little easier!

The weather cooperated, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the delicious food, having fun, and meeting new NSC members.

I hope everyone enjoyed the many delicious potluck dishes and had a chance to meet and get to know some new members.

A big THANK YOU to all the NSC members who stepped up to help make the picnic a success!

If you are looking for a beautiful coastal escape, the Tidelands Trail at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Newark is an absolute must-visit. This scenic path offers stunning, panoramic views of the expansive salt marshes, vibrant wetlands, and local wildlife, making it the perfect spot for a peaceful walk, birdwatching, or catching a breathtaking sunset over the bay.

Dogs on leash are allowed. We will be able to hike it easily in 1.5 hours (2.5 miles).

Have You Ever Seen an Active Volcano Erupt?

How many of you can say that you’ve actually seen an active, erupting volcano in your lifetime?

Believe it or not, Curtis O. and a few of our friends who were born and raised in Hawaii had never actually witnessed an active volcano erupt!

I guess I was Curtis’s good-luck charm!
My first trip to the Big Island—and my first volcanic eruption! What an incredible experience!

We were lucky enough to arrive on the Big Island on August 11, and the very next day, August 12, we heard the exciting news: the volcano was erupting!

Curtis put the pedal to the metal and drove about two hours along the winding roads from Kona to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. When we arrived, there was absolutely no parking! Luckily, the park rangers were extremely well organized and directed us to an open parking area.

Then came the next adventure—a 45-minute hike uphill to the overlook.

When we finally reached the top around 4:00 PM, visitors were gathered at the Uēkahuna overlook in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, all waiting and watching the incredible eruption in the distance.

WHAT A SIGHT!

We sat there for nearly two hours, taking tons of photos, enjoying the scenery, and just soaking in the moment. It was one of those experiences you don’t forget!

We wanted to stay even longer, hoping the eruption would continue for 24 hours, but it started get chilly and—of course—we didn’t bring our jackets!

Unfortunately, the eruption didn’t last 24 hours. It ended at 1:23 AM after about nine hours.

Still, we felt incredibly lucky to have been there at just the right time.

My first visit to the Big Island + My first volcanic eruption = An unforgettable adventure!

Sometimes, you really do need a little good luck!

Overview of Kīlauea Episode 53

This episode showcases significant volcanic activity and its characteristics.

• Eruption Start Time — Lava fountaining episode 53 at the summit of Kīlauea started on August 12 at 3:45 p.m. HST and ended on August 13 at 1:23 a.m.
• Lava Fountain Height — The lava fountain reached heights of about 500 feet (150 m).
• Gas Plume Elevation — The gas plume from the eruption rose to approximately 18,000 feet (5,600 m).
• Crater Activity — All lava produced is filling a crater at the summit, making it shallower over time.
• Seismic Activity — A magnitude 5.2 offshore earthquake occurred around the same time as the eruption.

As I’m doing research for my upcoming trip to Japan, I keep hearing so many wonderful things about the famous Japanese egg salad sandwich, or Tamago Sando, which can be found at local 7-Eleven convenience stores all over Japan.

I’ve heard that this recipe comes pretty close to the delicious sandwiches sold in Japan!

Made with a creamy egg salad filling tucked between slices of soft white bread, the Japanese Egg Sandwich (Tamago Sando) is a timeless snack that can be found in convenience stores throughout Japan. The rich and creamy filling is bursting with delicious egg yolk flavor, while the shokupan bread is incredibly soft, fluffy, and pillowy.

I can’t wait to try one when I visit Japan!

For the Tamago Filling

• 3 large eggs
• 2 Tbsp Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise
• 2 tsp milk
• ¼ tsp sugar (for the classic konbini flavor; skip for a savory filling)
• ¼ tsp Diamond Crystal kosher salt
• 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper

For the Sandwich Assembly

• 4 slices shokupan (Japanese milk bread) (sandwich thickness from an 8-slice square loaf; you can make homemade Shokupan)
• salted butter

Instructions

1. Gather all the ingredients.

To Make the Egg Salad

1. Put 3 large eggs (50 g each w/o shell) in a medium saucepan and add enough water to cover by 1 inch (2.5 cm). Bring it to a boil on medium heat. Once boiling, cook for 12 minutes.

2. Once it’s finished cooking, transfer the eggs to iced water to stop the cooking. Let them cool completely and peel the eggshells.

3. Transfer the peeled eggs to a bowl and mash with a fork. Try to mash the egg whites into small, same-sized pieces.

4. Add ¼ tsp sugar and ¼ tsp Diamond Crystal kosher salt to the eggs.

5. Add ⅛ tsp freshly ground black pepper and 2 tsp milk.

6. Add 2 Tbsp Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise and mix very well. Taste and sprinkle more salt and pepper, if needed.

To Assemble the Tamago Sando

1. Set out 4 slices shokupan (Japanese milk bread). Spread salted butter on top of each slice. For each sandwich, spread the egg salad on one of the slices.

2. Put the other slice of bread, buttered side down, on top of the egg salad. Place the sandwiches between two plates to compress slightly. Set aside for 5 minutes.

3. Cut the crusts off the bread. Tip: Don‘t throw away the crusts. Repurpose them to make Shokupan Crust Rusks. These crunchy, buttery snacks are so delicious! You can make them now or freeze those crust strips and make them later.

4. Cut the sandwiches in half. They‘re now ready to serve.

To Store

1. You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days
